We ’ve written a lot aboutPaul Pope‘s urban sprawl fiction , but with good reason : Not only is it touching , sexy and honest in its portrayal of life in a next metropolis , it ’s also one of the more beautiful science fabrication comics we ’ve seen . That ’s beautiful in both writing – 100 % is as gentle and kind to some of its character as it is unforgiving to others , and there ’s something excitingly dare in that – and art , with the linework at once busy and careful , full of selective information and yet , whole confident in trace it for you at the same time . In both form and content , it mixes influences from all manner of periods and Continent of comedian , storytelling and nontextual matter , becoming as much a melting bay window as the metropolis it portrays , and seeming as futuristic – or , at least , a signpost for a possible time to come – in that feeler , as well . We ’re also in love with the Scripture ’s take on scientific discipline fiction , as well ; present in the background detail , but not so much that it detracts or distracts from the timeless human floor in the forefront , and conversant enough to sympathize while unfamiliar enough to suggest the new we ’ve miss to get there . It ’s a truly wonderful bit of work .
In a strange way , it cue us of Brandon Graham ’s King City , which so almost made the list – It ’s still ongoing , so watch for it making Best Of Decade in 2019 – and also integrate international influences from inside and outside comedian to come up with something fresh and vivacious . More openly comedic than Pope ’s oeuvre , King City is as much a story of aliveness in a great city in the time to come , filled with romance , rue and disreputable characters , even with charming quat who ’ll fit your every motive with the veracious cocktail of drugs .
