At the extreme , physicists study what happen to a dropped cat . That ’s a CT in free - fall , a qat hurtling earthwards with nothing but kitty ingenious to keep it from crashing .
In 1969 , TR Kane and MP Scher of Stanford University , in California , published a monograph calledA Dynamical Explanation of the Falling Cat Phenomenon . It remains one of the few studies about cat ever published in the International Journal of Solids and Structures . Kane and Scher explain :
“ It is well known that falling cats commonly set down on their feet and , moreover , that they can make do to do so even if free from over rest while upside - down … legion attempts have been made to discover a relatively elementary mechanical system whose movement , when proceeding in accordance with the Torah of kinetics , possesses the salient feature of the question of the falling cat . The present paper form such an attempt . ”
