When you ’re running “ barefoot style , ” you have be careful as you ’re building enduringness . strain to run too far or too debauched in minimum shoes , and you could really hurt yourself . Brooks ’ all - new PureDrift is yet another brake shoe design to bridge over the gap between cushioning and reductivism . Let ’s see if it can win where others have failed .
disavowal : Minimalist running shoes are not for everybody . You have to adjust your track way and build very slowly or you will break your feet and ruin your entire liveliness . Do your preparation if you design to lento transition to brake shoe like these .
What Is It?
A Modern , easy , minimal - ish running horseshoe from Brooks .
Who’s It For?
People just set out into minimalist track , or minimalist moon curser who are pushing their limits in terms of milage and/or yard .
Design
At 5.6 ounces , these are very easy ( not as luminance as the 4.4 - ounceNew Balance Minimus Zero Trail ) . A rounded heel cupful keep the back of your ft in blank space as the shoe widen to allow toe - splay . The sole is divided up into sections to make it more whippy , and the top of the brake shoe is basically one giant elasticized lingua that wraps around your foot and cradles it nicely .

Using It
Very light and very prosperous . The flexible shoulder strap almost feels like it a spry - lacing ( aka a shock - electric cord ) . you may feel the ground extremely well ( I could differentiate when I was run on painted line ) , yet there ’s enough padding that the occasional accidental heel - smash wo n’t shoot a dash of pain up your wooden leg . Despite the skid ’s width , you could tree quite well .
The Best Part
I ’ve been coiffe my personal bests in these shoes for the last calendar month , both in swiftness and length . They are much more forgiving than other minimalist shoe , yet they do n’t misplace the best quality of minimalism .
Tragic Flaw
The shoes leave a blister in the same spot every clip I push beyond a few miles — on the pad of my left foot between first two toes . The Brooks PureConnect caused the same job sooner this year . I call up it ’s because the sole is part between your toes to permit more flexibility . Because it only fall out on one foot , I suppose it might be a primed yield that wo n’t affect everyone .
This Is Weird…
It seems like there ’s too much material in the upper , toward the front of the groundwork . Lace it up tight at all , and the materials bunch up and exhort into your foot , which is annoying .
Test Notes
The off - center lacing system follows the line of your foot ( similar to theSkora Form ) . It feel fairly good , but I care it a lot more when I swapped in speed - laces . The handsome uni - spit is a nice cutaneous senses and made the upper feel smooth and more supportive .
The padding is too fatheaded for rigorous minimalist runner , but for most , there ’s still more than enough control , and they ’re very well-fixed . you may even walk around in them and not feel like you ’re killing your heels . you’re able to have cut-in in or out to control whether it ’s a zero - fall or a 4mm - drop brake shoe . ( My testing was done without the insert . )
The stride is not super - robust . It ’s fine for damp footing and a little number of dirt , but for serious trail - running you ’re going to need stride with more pungency .

Should You Buy It?
If you ’re an draw a bead on minimalist runner , or a minimalist runner experiment with your boundary , then yes . They ’re light and comfy , but still have a lot of those must - have minimalist qualities , like effective ground - feel , zero - drop , and a very roomy toe - box . TheMerrell Barefoot Road Glovehas been my preferred running shoe , but now it has company . The PureDrift is n’t as thin a the Merrells , but for longer outpouring , these are what I ’ll be reaching for . If I can get that eldritch blister trouble screen out out , I ’ll be wear these when I do my first half - battle of Marathon in February 2013 .
