Is the only way to save the future to do the faulty matter ? Graphic designerJohn Bielenbergwon’t go that far … but he does imagine that the key may be think the wrong affair .
Bielenberg is somewhat of an optimist when it amount to the future , and how designer can help oneself shape it :
We ’re at multiple global tipping breaker point where the future is going to be radically different than the past - global mood alteration , the backside of height oil and fossil fuel , water supply issues , universe development in third world countries and the rise of the midway class there , the fiscal crash . Everything is linked now . You have the Internet and nobody really make out yet what that means . you could either be pessimistic about the hereafter or you could be optimistic . For me , an optimistic alternative includes ingenuity and creativity , and I box that under the big D : Design Thinking and how that can shape the future .
Bielenberg’sProject Mis an interdisciplinary design program created to help pattern impact communities , and his Modern project , theMav Lablooks to go one footprint further , by marrying groundbreaking thinkers with producers to try and … well , change the earthly concern , or at least the way we think about it :
There is a thing called “ overweighting information ” that all humans do . If there ’s a shark attack off the coast of Santa Cruz and it ’s well publicized , multitude in New Jersey will stay out of the water . They are overweighting that catastrophic incident . Even though intellectually there ’s no correlation between the two coasts , it changes our behavior anyway . To me that was just so chic . I thought . “ How am I a victim of that same kind of principle ? ” That ’s what led to Thinking Wrong . A lot of what we do for clients at our business firm is not design , it ’s more what we call guess Wrong Tanks … You apply Thinking Wrong to sire all kinds of possible theme and the [ Godhead ] are rapidly prototyping . They would be asking : What would that thought look like ? What would the graphics expect like ? What about metric ton - shirts ? And they ’re putting that up on the wall and it would inform moving those thought frontwards . make becomes a part of the process .
Can a metric ton - shirt really save the world ? I ’m skeptical , but I require to conceive ; as we integrate our lives with our devices and toy more and more all the fourth dimension , it stands to reason that the people take in those physical object become more and more important to us . Who ’s to say that the succeeding descendent of the iPod wo n’t save us all , one Clarence Shepard Day Jr. ?
