When the “ bad boy of French lit ” made a flick of his ground - break novel about cloning , cults and the end of the earth , he probably was n’t hop for comparison to Benny Hill or critics erupt out laugh during his first showing . Novelist and H.P. LovecraftcriticMichel Houellebecq was so offended by the critics ’ laugh , he set off a wardrobe group discussion on his movie Possibility Of An Island . But what was so bad about Possibility anyway ? Here ’s the plot outline of Possibility , according to electrical distributor Celluloid Dreams :
Years after separating from his father ’s sect , Daniel decides to give to the commune where he spring up up . Daniel realises that the promise of immortality made to the sect ’s follower , has in fact , become a realness through modern cloning techniques . His Padre military volunteer to be the first clon and Daniel replaces him . 25 generations later , Daniel25 has survived the cataclysms that have devastated the human slipstream . He lives like a hermit in a high - technical school , subterranean bunker protect from taint . His sole fellow is a dog-iron . The satellite trope he sees on his screens bring out the mien of a beautiful woman . Daniel25 ca n’t stand the impulse to follow her …
On the face of it , this movie has got everything . Cults , commune , cloning , immortality , dada issues , post - apocalyptical wastelands and sex . So what happened ? The Guardian explain :

It is honest to say that The Possibility of an Island is a odd motion-picture show – a sci - fi movie about cloning , weird religious sects and human life after the apocalypse . There is an variability of tone : certain sequence , such as a two-piece contest set in a Lanzarote beach resort , would n’t look out of topographic point on The Benny Hill Show . Elsewhere , the film is more in the spirit of Stanley Kubrick ’s 2001 : A Space Odyssey , or Andrei Tarkovsky ’s Stalker , notably the shots of Benoît Magimel ( as a character phone Daniel25 , the last human race alive ) , roaming through a free landscape with his dog in tow . The soundtrack feature Mozart and Beethoven , and at times the moving picture has an stark beauty ; at others , it is reminiscent of an onetime episode of Star Trek . The critics were not kind . This week Le Figaro ’s Brigitte Baudin described The Possibility of an Island as “ ridiculous ” and “ catastrophic ” , while Corriere della Serra ’s Maurizio Pollo compose that it was “ of a quite exemplary ennui ” . Others were less damning : the critic at El País reported that Houellebecq had train his first film “ with more enthusiasm than resultant ” .
So what I mostly learned from the above paragraph is that in gain to have cloning , cults and pop issues , it also has a slapstick two-piece contest . And that the low - budget flick resemble an episode of original Star Trek at times . Still not get wind why this picture show is not destine for greatness . Oh , and here ’s an interview with the military man himself about his novel :
