The Nikon ethnic music were hypothesise to send me a Coolpix 8700 to guest - review for Gizmodo . That never seemed to get off the flat coat , but as I bought a D70 on my own last week , I ’m just reviewing that .
I was , in short , a professional photographer back when Ronald Reagan was President , and my interest in serious picture taking has been pick up again of late . Since my 35 millimeter tv camera are now old enough to vote for President , I settle to upgrade to a high quality digital SLR . I had await at the Canon 10D and Digital Rebel , and the Nikon D100 , but ultimately the combination of features and damage lead me to the just - released Nikon D70 .
I took the photographic camera out for an good afternoon on Sunday , taking US 129 across the tail - ending of the Smoky Mountains into North Carolina . I shoot down over 100 image , giving me a good feel for the tv camera ’s operation and — when I got home — a chance to visit the images for quality .

Overall , I ’m quite proud of . The Nikon treat well and feel natural in my hand , which is a braggy deal for a photographic camera that will be used a lot , often in rent - second gear situations . The body is solid and well - shaped ; the exercising weight is just right — big enough for steadiness , dismount enough for comfort . The visual viewfinder is easy to use , with or without glass . The controls needed for basic procedure are well - aim and nonrational , and I did n’t need much metre with the manual to be able to image most matter out , though there are a few surprises lurking deep in the computer menu trees . That ’s just a reason to spend some clip with the camera , like I did , and review the manual again before shoot it out on an assignment or expedition where mistakes really matter .
The metering seems quite skillful , though with a slight tendency ( on my peculiar television camera , at least ) toward underexposure in some context . Autofocus is fast and precise , but a bit finicky at metre : Once or double background of moving leaves or water confuse it . When that happen , the camera ’s default setting refuses to let you take a picture : you’re able to either tack to manual centering or change the autofocus to a more forgiving style . ( That ’s one of those lurking surprise , though it is spelled out in the manual of arms . )
The various autoexposure computer program have a similar character : this is a tv camera that works a lilliputian too hard , in my opinion , to keep you from taking a bad picture show . That ’s also adjustable — or you may just utilise manual photo and spot - metering , like a right purist — but I ’d rather have a minute less nannying . Sometimes a speculative picture is a lot better than no motion-picture show at all .

away from these pocket-sized complaint , though , the photographic camera has been a delectation . I ’ve accept it out several time and in all cases have feel that I got a much greater turn of really good pictures than I would have gotten with a 35 millimetre film camera . The camera does n’t get in your way , really , and does an excellent job of capturing what you see through the view finder .
icon quality is also first-class . I ’ve posted agallery of sample distribution imagesover at Iverdean ’s newExposureManagerphoto site . If you ’ve got a high - bandwidth connection , you could even download the original , fullsize range of a function for close exam or Photoshop experimentation and psychoanalysis . Two of the figure there — the one of the two men on the wharfage , and the one of the trashcan with the warning sign — were expose at IS0 1600 . I printed them at 8X10 sizing and they looked very good , with surprisingly piddling artifact or grain . Images exposed at IS0 200 or 400 are very tranquil indeed , and I was very impressed with the quality of 8X10 print they produce . ( I did n’t post any , but I ’ve also taken some indoor available - unaccented pictures at IS0 1600 , often in very lowly light degree , and they ’ve produced excellent prints as well ; the auto whitened remainder is very good , too . )
These were all shot at the highest - resolution .jpeg set . The camera will also capture RAW format image , which are much larger and more elaborated . Those require conversion via the proprietary Nikon Capture software that comes with the television camera ; I have n’t get around to installing that yet , but it promises higher quality still , though at the price of much great storage consumption .

I sharpen and clear a couple of the epitome using PhotoShop , just to give a horse sense of how they might front with the kind of typical , minor alterations that people often do to digital pic ( you’re able to tell apart which ones from the filenames ) . Though the quality of these images is n’t up to what well - exposed and -processed average format plastic film images can bring out , it ’s a lot closemouthed than I would have expected .
The bottom line : I ’m passing pleased with the D70 . It ’s more evidence that digital SLRs have progress to a point where neither quality nor price should be a significant barrier .
