A newstudypublished in Global Change Biology is among the first to demonstrate this , showing how larger , hotter fires in the Sierra Nevada are cause lichen , a cardinal constituent of woodland food web , to take a bang .
The researchers look at 104 conifer forest plots that had burn four to 16 years prior in five tumid fire . They found that while low - chroma burns had little or no effect on barque - dwelling lichen , diverseness and abundance reject as fervour hardship increased . On the plots that burned most intensively , lichen were severely foreshorten , and had made little recovery even after 15 year .
Lead subject source Jesse Miller , an ecologist at the University of California , Davis anticipate the variety “ passably spectacular . ”
