Black History Month starts today. Here’s how it got started, and some dates you should know.

Today mark off the beginning of Black History Month , and we assure you it does not — as actressStacey Dash asserted on the TV show Fox & Friends — have anything to do with segregate a portion of the United States ’ population . Rather , it mark the achievements of black Americans in national history .

In 1926 , the Association for the Study of African American Life and story buy at a national Negro History Week . While the 1954 Supreme Court decisionBrown v. Board of Educationstruck a huge effectual blow to the practice of school segregation , it stay elsewhere in the South — including private businesses .

Rosa Parks was born on Feb. 4 , 1913 , in Tuskegee , Ala. At historic period 42 , she was working as a seamstress in Montgomery , Ala. , and was a prominent appendage of the NAACP . On Dec. 1 , 1955,her activism would sling her to national celebrity .
