BeforeU2closed out their Las Vegas residency for the year, the band unwrapped a little holiday spirit.
The Grammy winners began the performance with justthe Edgestrumming on an acoustic guitar, but as soon asBonosang the iconic opening lines — “Christmas / The snow’s coming down / Christmas / I’m watching it fall” — the crowd erupted in cheers.

The band featuring Bono, the Edge, 62, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Bram van den Berg first released their cover of the Blossoms singer’s classic for the 1987 charity compilation albumA Very Special Christmas. They later included the song on their 2004 recordUnreleased & Rare, which was released as a part ofThe Complete U2box set.
In 1987, they also released amusic videofor the track featuring footage of the “With or Without You” band performing the song during the soundcheck for a November ‘87 show at the Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In the black and white clip, the singer/songwriter rocks out to the Christmas tune while frequently interacting with his bandmates and cheekily looking into the camera.
This time around, the hitmakers gifted fans with the cover as they were nearly closing out the 2023 dates of theiracclaimed Las Vegas residencyat the new, technologically advanced Sphere venue. The show began back in late September — kicking off live shows at the new event space off the Vegas Strip — and ended its run of shows for the year on Saturday.

OnThe View’sBehind the Tablepodcast, the singer, 82, opened up about why she loves the Irish rockers’ take in particular. “I have a connection with U2 and the song because U2 wanted me to do all the background parts, not me and some people,” the star explained. “I did all the background parts. We went in and we did the song.”
